DATE: JULY 15-25, 2025 | WHERE: MATO GROSSO DO SUL STATE – BRAZIL | 09 NIGHTS/ 10 DAYS
WHAT TO EXPECT?
A 10-day, 9-night itinerary in the southern Brazilian Pantanal, passing through the Abobral and Nhecolândia regions.
We set off from São Paulo – SP towards the city of Campo Grande, capital of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. A van will be waiting at the airport to take us to our lodge in the middle of the Pantanal.
We will be staying at the Pousada Santa Clara “LODGE”, which preserves an area of 1700 hectares, and which has a strategic location, close to the Miranda River, an excellent place for jaguar watching, between the Rio Negro State Park and the Nhecolândia region, considered by many to be the most beautiful and emblematic region of the Pantanal.
The main focus of the tour is wildlife watching, which is why we chose the month of July, in the middle of the dry season, when the rivers and lagoons have not yet completely dried up, allowing us to move around the rivers in search of the animals concentrated on their banks.
The Pantanal’s fauna is one of the richest on the planet, both in variety and quantity, and the Pantanal’s sparse vegetation ends up benefiting the human visitor even more in making it easier to see all this wildlife.
The Pantanal’s extraordinary biodiversity includes around 660 species of birds, 100 species of mammals, 160 species of reptiles, 40 species of amphibians, more than 260 species of fish and untold numbers of insect species, including more than 1,000 different butterflies.
The Pantanal is one of the last refuges for a large number of mammals that were once found in abundance throughout South America, such as the Jaguar, the Puma, the Ocelot, the Guará Wolf, the Tapir, the Anteater, the Otter, the Capybara, the Deer and many others.
However, as rich as the Pantanal is in terms of mammals, when we talk about birds we enter other dimensions. For ornithologists, the Pantanal is a true paradise where large numbers of birds of the most varied species are constantly present. From the first rays of light on the horizon, the Pantanal is filled with birdsong, from the most harmonious and tuneful of some to the hoarse cries of others. All sizes of birds are abundantly represented in the Pantanal, from the tiny Hummingbird to the gigantic and majestic Tuiuiú, the symbol bird of the Pantanal.
With more than 200 species represented, reptiles and amphibians also guarantee constant encounters with visitors to the Pantanal. Alligators in particular characterize the Pantanal’s landscapes, both in and out of the water. The mythical Sucuri, although less abundant than the Alligator, is often found on the banks of rivers and corichos and the more attentive among us will be able to discover the beautiful iguanas, camouflaged and blending in with the foliage of the trees.
The team is made up of nature Photographer and Wildlife Filmmaker Rafael Guadeluppe, founder of the video production company Latin Wild Films and author of the documentary about the Atlantic Forest “The Pulse of the Atlantic Forest”, and Mexican naturalist and Wildlife Filmmaker Juan René Villanueva Maldonado, do canal Historia Natvrae.
